The RT2 series high-speed backplane connector enables high-speed data transmission between backplanes, achieving a transmission rate of 6.25Gb/s, expandable to 10Gb/s. It is an important interface for the VME bus system. The VME bus, designed in 1981 by companies like Motorola for Euroboards, supports the backplane architecture standard for multiprocessor computer systems, with bandwidth increasing from the initial 40Mb/s to 320Mb/s. With the rapid development of communication technology, to meet the higher bandwidth requirements of VME bus inter-board data transmission, the VSO organization under VITA (VITA International Trade Organization Association) developed and launched new standards, primarily VITA41, VITA46, and VITA48. All three standards are based on the RT2 connector. The increased bandwidth has led to the gradual adoption of the WE bus in radar, image processing, and broadband communication fields.
VITA41 (also known as VXS, short for VMEbus Switched Serial) is a switchable serial extension standard. It adds structural technology to the traditional VME bus, replacing the P0/J0 connectors of the original WE module with RT2 connectors, thus increasing the data bus transmission bandwidth. VITA46, also known as VPX (Versatile Protocol Switching), replaces all connectors with RT2 connectors that support high-speed differential signal transmission, thereby achieving higher transmission speeds and more signal pins to meet user bandwidth requirements. VITA48, short for Enhanced and Rugged Design Mechanical Specification, supplements VITA46 in terms of module structure, ruggedized cooling, and other aspects, enabling it to meet the requirements of harsh military environments such as airborne applications, including those requiring resistance to shock, vibration, temperature, and altitude.
